Dr. Brad Eastman, M.Ed., Ph.D., has enjoyed being an instructor for Athabasca University since 2007.

Brad has been involved in teaching and instructional design for over twenty years. Brad is interested not only in designing and teaching courses, but in supporting students during the learning process and helping them to succeed after their course work is complete.

Brad’s interests include:

  • Inclusive course design and teaching.
  • AI and instructional design.
  • The discourse around AI in industry and education.
  • The ethical integration of AI tools into course design, assessments and research.
  • Instructional design trends.

Working as an independent consultant has helped Brad to see the connections between academic work and practice - something he brings to all his courses. He has worked on projects for BC Hydro, BC Water and Waste Association, Cisco systems, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Oregon State University, Providence Health, and the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing at UBC, in addition to a number of other projects. Brad has done presentations on best practices for online instructors, knowledge management, and building online communities of practice.

At the Distance Education and Technology department of the University of British Columbia where he worked as a project manager for several years, Brad managed the work of course authors, graphic designers and web programmers to build, launch and revise new online courses.

Brad is an avid cyclist and enjoys riding the trails on BC’s famous North Shore and braving the roads of Vancouver when mountain biking isn’t an option. Brad also has a black belt in Hapkido. Given that he spends so much time around computers, it’s not surprising that he’s always liked sci-fi.  He also enjoys paleontology and makes sure he sees any dinosaur exhibits that come through town!
