Dr. Michael Lithgow is an Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies, in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, in FHSS at Athabasca University.
His research broadly considers citizen engagement in public cultures. Current research is focused on expanded approaches to technology literacy and political implications of digital literacy and capacity. Field work includes community broadband network initiatives in rural and remote communities in North and South America, and makerspace / digital literacy programs in public libraries.
Other areas of active research include implications of technology changes in practices of journalism and journalism training, and creative infrastructural approaches to urban exclusions of artists and artist precarity.
In addition to various scholarly publications, Dr. Lithgow has published two collections of poetry: Who We Thought We Were As We Fell (Cormorant Books, 2021), and Waking in the Tree House (Cormorant Books, 2012), and writes and publishes short stories.
