Medical Withdrawals

When the need for a course withdrawal clearly pertains to accommodation requirements or disability related circumstances, such as the students change in condition, hospitalization, etc., Accessibility Services will recommend a medical withdrawal. Before forwarding the recommendation to the Office of the Registrar, Accessibility Services will:

  • Request that you submit medical or other specified documentation to verify the situation
    • Please review Appendix A of the VOA form and/or the summary of disability documentation.
  • If funded, you speak with your SFA Advisor to review potential implications on funding with you to
    • Identify what steps you will need to take now to protect your future eligibility
    • Prepare supporting documentation that may be required by the funding agency.
  • Review what impact withdrawal will have on academic standing,
    • Discuss what recommendations can be made related to the grade that will appear on the academic record.
  • Discuss what recommendations can be made regarding refunds based on time of enrollment, condition of course materials, reason for withdrawal, in accordance with AU policies for Refunds and Returns.

Upon your acceptance of the above, Accessibility Services will forward the request and recommendations to the Office of the Registrar for approval and processing. The student will receive an e-letter in their MyAU portal confirming when the withdrawal is complete.

Subject to the payment of fees, you may re-register in the course at any time. A learning resources fee may also be applied if the course has been revised.

Medical Withdrawals are not permitted by students in these circumstances:

  • After the final exam is attempted and deemed to have been written;
  • After all course work is deemed to have been submitted for marking, for courses that do not have a final exam requirement;
  • During disciplinary proceedings. If, at the conclusion of the proceedings, it has been decided not to proceed with a charge of Student Academic Misconduct or Non-Academic Misconduct and the student wishes to withdraw from a course or program, the withdrawal may be backdated to the date the proceedings were initiated, at the request of the student.
